100+ organizations call on legislators, Governor to keep CEQA strong in 2024

More than 100 groups, representing a wide variety of environmental justice, land use and conservation organizations from across California, joined with CEQA Works to send a joint letter to California lawmakers and Governor Newsom, urging them to keep CEQA strong in 2024.

The letter reminds our leaders in Sacramento of the unique protections CEQA affords all Californians and the environment. Specifically:

  • CEQA promotes environmental justice in low-income communities and communities of color throughout the state.
  • CEQA plays a critical role in helping California reach its climate goals by requiring developers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their projects.
  • For over 50 years, CEQA has protected California’s vital natural, cultural and historical resources.

Because housing is typically the reason given for weakening CEQA, the letter explains why the housing arguments are unfounded and asks our leaders to explore real solutions to the state’s housing shortage.

The letter is signed by CEQA Works Steering Committee member groups California Environmental Voters; Center for Biological Diversity; Center on Race, Poverty and the Environment (CRPE); Communities for a Better Environment; Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC); Planning and Conservation League; Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment; and Sierra Club California; as well as dozens of other groups from all over the state.
