The San Dieguito River Park, established in 1989, is a regional greenway and open space that stretches along the San Dieguito River for more than 55 miles. Beginning at the river’s headwaters on Volcan Mountain near Julian, the park continues through the foothills, across the valley, around Lake Hodges, and finally concludes where the river meets the ocean between Solano Beach and Del Mar. The park provides more than 65 miles of free, public, year-round trails; provides habitat protection for dozens of species; and has dramatically improved water quality. At every step along the way, the San Dieguito River Park has been carefully planned with community input and scientific rigor thanks to CEQA. The thoughtful planning process implemented by CEQA has ensured that the San Dieguito River will be conserved and enjoyed for generations to come.
