In 2019, two conservation groups filed CEQA litigation against Marin County to protect endangered coho salmon in Marin County’s San Geronimo Valley, part of the Lagunitas Creek watershed. This watershed is home to one of the last remaining strongholds of coho salmon in a stretch of coastline that runs from Humboldt County to near Santa Cruz. In 2021, the court agreed that the County failed to adequately protect coho salmon and their habitat. As a result of this litigation, in July 2022, Marin County passed a science-based Stream Conservation Ordinance to protect the salmon.
